Hawaii has seen a surge in natural disasters in recent years, as rising sea levels leave coastal communities more susceptible to extreme weather events, mudslides, and high surfs. Fortunately, recent advances in AI and analytics technologies are helping Hawaii find new ways to prepare for and respond to natural disasters.I strongly recommend you watch Hawaii Department of Transportation Director Ed Sniffen and Google Cloud Enterprise Architect Daniel Liu’s recent panel discussion on how the Hawaii DOT uses Google’s datasets and analytics platforms to gain better insights from climate data — and create safer communities in the state.

Here’s a hard truth: Women in the tech industry are 18% less likely to be promoted to managerial positions than men.But don't let this disparity give you imposter syndrome. For anyone who needs some extra encouragement this week, I want to share 3 mindsets that have helped me overcome self-doubt and advance my career:- Embrace failure. Growth happens when you take risks.-Invest in a support network that can help you sharpen your skills.-Advocate for yourself. Don’t be afraid to communicate what you bring to the table and make your wins known! If you have any recent wins you’re proud of, let’s celebrate them below 👇

Modern scientific research teams are constantly working to adopt new technologies that can streamline research and support ever-evolving workflows. To help researchers meet this goal, we recently developed the Google Cloud HPC toolkit, an open-source software that provides researchers with customizable high performance computing resources in Google Cloud. Stanford University and UC Riverside were two of the first research institutions to adopt the Cloud HPC toolkit, providing much-needed flexibility for their HPC teams and allowing researchers to easily customize workflows, collaborate with other teams, and connect cloud and on-premise resources. I’ve been so impressed by these teams’ achievements, and I look forward to supporting more research institutions as they transition to cloud computing!

I was so excited to see Teddra Thomas Burgess on WashingtonExec’s list of public sector leaders to watch in 2024. Teddra is more than deserving of this recognition. She has led the charge in helping public sector agencies adopt AI and cutting-edge technologies, all while meeting strict security and compliance requirements. Congratulations, Teddra! I can’t wait to see what you accomplish in the new year.

I’m thrilled to share The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has teamed up with Google Public Sector to create the Chat with CTA chatbot, a new virtual assistant that will make it easier than ever for riders to contact the agency. The Chat with CTA bot will be able to respond to questions in English, Spanish, Polish, Simplified Chinese, and Filipino/Tagalog starting in early 2024. This is a terrific first step to modernizing and improving customer support for Chicago riders, and I can’t wait to see what comes next!

In case you missed it, we just launched Google’s most capable AI model yet: Gemini. It’s one of the most ambitious science and engineering projects we’ve ever undertaken, and I am incredibly excited about its potential to accelerate economic progress, scientific discoveries, and productivity for our nation. Gemini is far more advanced than existing multimodal models because it can seamlessly generalize, understand, combine, and operate across text, images, video, and code. I look forward to discussing what these state-of-the-art capabilities can achieve for our public sector customers.
