Man convicted for breaking woman’s jaw with drill (2)

A Douglas County jury convicted a man for battery after he hit a woman in the face with an electric drill nearly two years ago, shattering her jaw, knocking out several teeth and busting her lip.

Ryan Joseph Spratlin, 29, of Douglasville was convicted of aggravated battery under the Family Violence Act.

When arrested, he also was charged with cruelty to children and hindering another from making an emergency call. He will be sentenced Wednesday.

“Too often these acts of violence are kept in the shadows and victims are left to fend for themselves in finding a path forward,” Douglas County District Attorney Dalia Racine said. “We applaud the courage of this victim and those who bring voice to the violence they incur.”

Court records show that, around 5 a.m. on May 30, 2022, the victim found Spratlin alone with another woman at his apartment on Parkway Drive.

After the victim told the other woman to leave, Spratlin grabbed and started to wrestle with her, eventually shoving her to the ground.

As the victim’s back was turned, Spratlin knocked her unconscious with the drill. After regaining consciousness, the victim tried to call 911, only to have Spratlin stop her. Unable to find her phone, the victim left the home and called 911 from a nearby gas station.

At the home, Douglasville police officers found blood on the floor, a mattress and a wall. Several teeth were lying next to the mattress and in a nearby bathroom. The next day, police recovered the drill, which was covered in blood and the victim’s hair. The tool also contained a metal clip matching the shape of a wound on the victim’s face.

Several organizations in Douglas County provide resources abuse victims, including The Trinity Center, which can be reached at (678) 715-1196 and SHAREHouse, which can be reached at (770) 949-0626.
